The safety and calm of patriarchal comfort have been irreversibly shattered, and sins are passed down through generations. In order to survive—through new sins—everyone strives for money and power. And when a brother sells his own brother, she appears. Singing, beautiful, smiling, sincere. She teaches the brutalized ones values that cannot be bought or sold—love, forgiveness, honesty, respect.

We are archetypically connected to Yovkov’s world and his characters, and his play has long become a classic, one of the gems of Bulgarian drama. Zlatil and Boryana are iconic characters, a benchmark for masterful acting.

And the conflict in the play becomes more and more relevant in today’s consumer-driven world.
Love cannot withstand the pressure of materialism... That’s why Boryana is needed.
