*“When Molière wrote Tartuffe in the 17th century, he created a play that not only denounced the hypocrisy and fanaticism of his own time, but also revealed the eternal human desire for power, control, and manipulation under the guise of virtue.
Tartuffe is more than a character — he is an archetype. A hypocrite who uses the mask of piety to deceive and destroy.
In an era when religion was both a spiritual and political force, Tartuffe struck directly at those who abused faith in God for personal gain. This play, sharp and humorous, was understandably censored and controversial — because it exposed truths that were painful and inconvenient.
But why is Tartuffe still relevant today? Because he is not just a religious hypocrite. He is a metaphor for anyone who takes advantage of fear, ignorance, and people’s naive trust.
Today, we can find Tartuffe everywhere — in politics, the media, social networks, and interpersonal relationships. He is the one who promises salvation but obsessively seeks control. The one who wields morality as a weapon and uses values as a cover for unethical ambition.
For me, Tartuffe is not just a historical comedy from the classical era, but a mirror of our society. It pushes moral norms to the extreme. In a world where information becomes a tool for manipulation, and "right thinking" is dictated by the loudest voice, Tartuffe returns — both as a character and a warning.
Through the dynamics between Molière’s characters Orgon and Tartuffe, this production explores the mechanisms of power that exploit trust, and the hypocrisy that mocks obsessive faith in noble ideals. How are lies created and sustained? Why does gullibility blind the reason of those unable to recognize false piety and false courage? And what does it cost a society when truth is silenced by lies, control, and manipulation?
The Tartuffe situation is, to me, a call for reflection and recognition of the hypocrisy around us. Tartuffe is a lesson in doubt, awakening, and liberation.”*
